Choosing wood finish depends on what you want to get in the end. Definitely, wood stain is for you if you want to keep the natural wood grain visible which I think the most important and beauteous thing of the wood piece. Stain will show the wood grain and make it look darker just as you desire. On the other hand, paint will cover wood grain but there are much more colors to choose from, but paints got less dark colors than stains. None of this should be surprising, stains are designed especially to make your wood look darker.
On the other hand, Minwax products require one to apply several layers of coating to get the color required. To achieve the desired color, Varathane products only require a single coating, since they are thick and of good quality. You have three options; water- based wood filler, epoxy or solvent- based wood filler. It has a four color range; brown, clear, off- white and white. The major problem with Minwax polyshades is that it takes long to dry.
Use plastic sheet, tarp or other non-linting fabric to fashion a tent with 3 walls and head high top. Alternatly,2 walls in vee with top works well also. From cardboard and packing tape build a box with 2 openings that alow a PLEATED PAPER filter to be taped over one opening and plastic tent inclosing other.
Poly top coats are hands down more durable and offer the ultimate protection for your painted furniture. I have just painted a large table to cream, with a finish of Minwax Polycrylic. I gave it a coat with a very high quality synthetic paint brush. Finish was worse, with lots of lines plus masses of pimples that might have been air bubbles. I just used up my first can of their Flat out Flat top coat. It is fantastic, especially if you want a hand rubbed wax look finish.

We do not recommend using any of the Emtech topcoats on flooring applications unless an anti-slip coating is applied over it. This is due to the high slip factor of our finishes, they are very “fast/slippery”. In order to find the best polyurethane for the wood in your home, there are some things you should consider to help narrow down your options. When it comes to finding the best polyurethane, the most important thing to consider is, of course, the protection it provides wood and how it can be used.
They have easy to apply Wipe-on Oil based top coats that come in gel or liquid form. They also have a few pre-stain conditioners and lots of other urethanes, urethane combos, and other conditioners for your projects. While wood stains add color and bring out the beauty of the wood, clear finishes protect the wood and enhance its beauty. Whether you choose to stain your wood project or not, it is important that you protect the wood with a clear finish, such as polyurethane.
As a result, water-based polyurethanes are a better choice for light and graying woods. The amber tint of aging oil-based polyurethane products tend to spoil lighter types of hardwood flooring. Keep in mind that you can only add a second coat after your initial coat has been allowed a drying time of at least 2 hours. The product must dry for three days before you resume normal usage. You must wait approximately 2 hours before adding a new coat.
We are in the process of re-finishing a sunroom porch that was built in the ’50s. The entire room is clad in real minwax vs varathane clear coat wood paneling made from knotty yellow pine. The room has windows on three sides, so it’s flooded with sunlight.
Its More Difficult To Apply Polycrylic Evenly Than Polyurethane
Of the three water based finishes I mentioned these are products that some clients prefer by name. What can be agreed upon by any maker of professional products is that they all in fact are superior to what’s generally a household name to homeowners. Additionally as you know regardless of what finish is used, the finish is only going to be as good as the sanding and preparation prior to the application of finish. While what finish is used is certainly important, the sanding and prep are more important. While I like you do not condone home owners to take on the art and science of sanding and refinishing their own wood flooring certain home owners feel up to the task. This being the link the the first of 4 of Bona Kemis sanding and finishing series.
The Murphy’s Oil Soap, then Clorox wipes, then paper toweling of a 40′ square took less than an hour and the results were perfect. They floors were dry in minutes and tomorrow I will polish them with a water-based polish. I have read all the comments and problems, that people are having with stain oil based. I am having the same problem, I striped the old stain on a Mahogany Buffet, sanded and put the conditioner.
Congratulations on a well designed scientific-type of experiment that was well documented and easy to understand. Much better than most of the one-off anecdotes posted by users. Allows one to draw their own conclusions about the result one is trying to achieve. I selected the General Finishes stain for my red oak project. Looking forward to the results when stain arrives.

Agree rwiegand, got walnut floors because that is the look I wanted. Unfortunately, walnut doors were not in my budget and the unstained oak doors are too much of a contrast in color. To add to what klem wrote, most factory finishes are a recipe of ingredients. They are almost never a single stain/dye/colorant and always include the final finish coat. Use some medium sandpaper (#120 grit paper) and sand the wood if you are going to use a water-based stain. If you are planning to use an oil-based stain, use a slightly heftier grit paper as high as #180.
I’ve used this urethane on everything from my cherry bedroom set to kitchens and other furniture. In fact, I’ve set aside us of a professional HVLP sprayer in favor of this finish. First, make sure your projects surface preparation is complete, fully sanded, and clean of all dust and debris.

It is not overly thin, and most customers report applying anywhere from five to ten coats for a strong finish. Because it dries clear, it works well for projects in which you want to retain the natural hue of the wood. Each polyurethane can be applied in a different way. The most popular method of application is with a paintbrush; however, polyurethanes are also available as wipe-ons or sprays. Brush-on polyurethanes work best on flat surfaces. Because brushes can hold a large amount of finish, you can coat the project in less time.

Rust-Oleum Spar Varnish is a marine grade clear finish that is great for exterior applications where the finish will be exposed to water. While water-based finishes are generally less toxic than a solvent finish there are still toxins to keep track of. Most penetrating clear finishes are toxin free, however check the individual supplier and remember to check the actual composition. A cutting board is a great example of where a clear finish is desired and the finish cannot be on the surface. And, these can be used separately or together based on your project and desired aesthetics.
Minwax Paste Finishing Wax
Polycrylic is available in satin, gloss, and high gloss. I’ve been using the matte-finish many of my recent projects. I think the matte finish pairs well with chalky-paint finishes. The surface needs to be roughed up to give the next coat something to bite into.
If you have a naturally dark wood that you need to stain, consider more of a glossy stain. However, if you have a noticeably light wood that you want to darken, look for more walnut, espresso, and mocha tinted stains. Choosing a stain finish can be tricky, especially consider the amount of options there are. Varathane and Minwax each are known for their variety in colors available. If you are going for a classic, refined wood finish look, consider something like Varathane’s Classic Wood Stain Espresso, or Minwax’s Dark Walnut finish. Darker finishes evoke a classic style that can really add character to any room.
This formula also provides you with the advantage of an “anti-settling” technology. This alleviates worries about the constant need to stir and remix the product. This wood stain also dries to the touch in as little as 1-2 hours. In this case, the color choices are all natural wood grain stains. The color palette reflects various shades of natural wood types; cherry, maple, mahogany, pine, oak and pecan. None of the color selections reflect colors that deviate from the natural and typical wood grain hues.

This is much too late for you, but perhaps someone else can benefit from it. Apply polycrilic with a foam brush in straight lines. After the poly has sat 1-2 minutes come back with a very light end-to-end brush stroke. Don’t do this multiple times if you can avoid it.
It may take up to two days to dry and unlike Minwax that will be tacky two weeks later, Rustoleum Ultimate will dry. Lowes used to carry it and they no longer carry in stores but online. —They carry Rustoleum Ultimate and I use it for all my wood staining and many other things are well. Polycrylic is for going over water-based paint like latex. (Hence the ‘acrylyic’ in the word) Personally, I despise oil based clean up, and prefer an easy water-based clean up.
